On the Scene in Long Beach: Irrigation Show 2018 with UF's E3 Learners

Among the many events that go on during the annual Irrigation Show and Education Conference, one of the more rewarding is the E3 Irrigation Program. Every summer the Irrigation Foundation invites students from around the country to apply for a week or exposure, experience and education on location at the show. This includes attending classes and networking events, and engaging vendors during the large product expo. 2018’s E3 Learner class included students from 19 schools in 14 states. Representing UF were two PhD students from the Department of Horticultural Sciences. They agreed to share a little of their E3 experience with IrriGator.

Can you introduce yourselves?
RL: I am Ricardo Lesmes. I am originally from Colombia. Currently I’m working in Dr. Johnny Ferrarezi's lab located in Fort Pierce at Indian River REC. I’m a PhD student in the Department of Horticultural Sciences. We grow premium grapefruit, which is one of the most sensitive citrus species to HLB (Huanglongbing or citrus greening - the worst disease the industry has ever faced). I work with citrus under protective screens. We’re focused on preventing infection of the trees by using physical barriers against the main vector of this disease - Asian citrus psyllid.

This production system of groves enclosed in screenhouses is a different microclimate for the crop. I focus on improving the horticultural aspects of the production of high quality fresh fruit. Experiments focus on testing new citrus varieties, testing the effects of different color nets, testing canopy management (automated or manual) and testing irrigation and fertigation management of the groves using soil moisture sensors and weather stations in the screenhouses.

NM: I am Natalia Macan, a PhD student at the Horticultural Sciences department. I started my studies in August 2018 and I am still discussing the details of my research project with my advisor, Dr. Rhuanito Ferrarezi. However, I can say that it will focus on irrigation management strategies for HLB affected grapefruit. HLB, or greening, is a disease with severe impact on the citriculture. Regarding the plant, one of the consequences is the reduction of root density. This affects the plant ability to uptake water and nutrients. So, it is necessary to study if the frequency of irrigation events and the amount of applied water should be different from healthy plants. Moreover, most of the irrigation management here in Florida is based on weather data, and the idea is also to test soil moisture sensors.


What motivated you to apply to E3?
RL: Different motivations. One was networking. I am starting my second year here. The industry production systems and technology level here is quite different from my country. I wanted to get to know the industry, manufacturers, other researchers, and learn about different equipment to improve my knowledge to conduct better research.

E3 Learner Class of 2018
NM: The main reason was to expand my irrigation knowledge. I have been passionate about irrigation since 2012, when I took my first undergraduate level class. I had an excellent professor (Dr. Tamara Gomes) and I liked learning how to develop an irrigation project. It caught my attention because it involves biological concepts, plants and soil, and engineering concepts, using math and physics to calculate friction loss. I was very excited when Dr. Ferrarezi told me about the E3 program. I knew that it would be an excellent opportunity to improve my knowledge, learn about new technologies and meet people that also work with irrigation.


What do you feel was the most rewarding aspect of this week?
RL: Everything was enriching to me. I enjoyed the classes. They were useful to improve and update my knowledge in this field. Being aware about all the different resources we have as students and future scientists. The expo is impressive - so many manufacturers and companies that work to improve water management in different fields, always producing better products, integrating technological advancements to manage water better.

NM: It is hard to choose just one thing. During the week I had the opportunity to attend many events and each one was special in a different way. At the education classes, I improved my technical knowledge and what I learned about drip irrigation design I am going to use to double check the irrigation system in my experiment. At technical sessions, I became aware of new irrigation research and this will also be helpful for my research because I learned about some difficulties in the use of soil moisture sensors. At the exhibition, I visited many companies and discovered new types of sensors that can be used for irrigation scheduling. I also had the opportunity to meet students, researchers, vendors, all type of people that work with irrigation. However, if I have to choose, there were two most rewarding moments in the week. The first was Mark Eaton’s keynote lecture and his message to help and protect who is around us. We live in a very competitive world and his speech made me think about it. The second moment was the Women in Irrigation Social. We know that irrigation is a male-dominated industry, so it was gratifying to see the room full of women that, like me, decided to follow this career.


Would you recommend E3 to students focused on ag or irrigation?
NM: Of course! This is a unique opportunity! If you like irrigation, you must participate in the E3 program. As I said in the previous answer if you attend the Irrigation Show and Education Conference you will learn, expand your network and be exposed to new ideas that can be useful in your job/research.

RL: Absolutely. This experience not only updates your knowledge but it also gives you the chance to open your eyes and have a wider picture of the industry and see what is going on in a real life sense because it encompasses scientific seminars and also what the industry is doing for growers.

Next Stop Long Beach: Previewing Irrigation Show 2018

The irrigation industry is gathering next week in Long Beach, CA, for the 2018 Irrigation Show and Education Conference. Easily the largest industry event of the calendar year, the Irrigation Show features trainings and certification exams, technical programs presenting new research in both landscape and agricultural irrigation, and a massive product expo showcasing the latest wares from new and established manufacturers.

UF-ABE will be present at Irrigation Show 2018. Tuesday morning’s technical program includes two presentations from the Dukes research team’s Bernard Cardenas. “The rain sensor study compares field results of rain sensor performance to modeled results of turfgrass dry out and reinforces the results from our experiments across simulated different soil types,” said Dr. Michael Dukes. The other talk is an update on the long-running work studying smart irrigation technology in residential sites in Orange County, FL.


E3
Another exciting aspect of the Irrigation Show is the annual Irrigation E3 Program. E3 invites students from across the country for a week of exposure, experience and education at the event. 2018 includes students from 19 schools in 14 different states! Two UF Horticulture Science graduate students will be making the journey to Long Beach. Exam Week
Since the focus of my work has shifted from research to practice this year, the Irrigation Show is more relevant than ever for me. I’ll be there next week excited to see familiar faces and learn about new products. I’ll also be taking me first ever certification exam. My Week with the Irrigation Industry: An E3 Report Back

Experience, exposure and education are the three tenets of Irrigation Foundation’s E3 Learner Program. This is accomplished by inviting selected students to take part in a week of course work and networking during the annual Irrigation Show and Education Conference. 2017’s E3 Class included 28 students and 2 instructors from 17 states. IrriGator asked UF-ABE masters student Justice Diamond to report back on his E3 experience in Orlando, Florida.

My focus
The focus of my graduate work is to develop best management practices and deliver those to farms throughout the Suwannee and lower Suwannee basins in North Florida. What I’m working on specifically is to develop an app for irrigation scheduling for corn.

My advisors Drs. Migliaccio and Dukes encouraged me to apply when they saw the opportunity arise and I went ahead and applied. The courses I selected for E3 were Landscape Water Management and Planning and Center Pivot Design. I’m really interested in Center Pivot technology and was especially looking forward to learning more about that.

The Big Week
My E3 experience was very positive. The highlight of the week for me was getting to know other people - having conversations about what they’re doing, the research they’re doing, and having conversations with people in the industry about how they perceive what the industry is going to look like in the future and what they want out of students. 
The least enjoyable part was how long classes were. The teachers were very good, but with an eight hour class there actually isn’t a lot of time to go see the exhibits and I think that part could be condensed. Nevertheless, having an in depth discussion with someone who lives and breathes center pivots I learned a whole lot more. In that sense it was very educational.

Takeaway
Thank you to the Irrigation Foundation for the opportunity to participate in E3. Meeting people who are all about irrigation, it can only benefit me because that’s what I work with, too. I can only learn and grow from their experiences. My advice to eligible students in 2018: definitely apply! There’s nothing you can lose from the experience and you’ll only learn and meet people who will help you out in the long run.

Looking Ahead: Irrigation Show and Education Conference 2017

Next week irrigation industry professionals from all walks will descend on Orlando, FL, for Irrigation Show and Education Conference 2017. The largest irrigation-focused event of the calendar year, it is as advertised, part product expo (everything you can imagine and more) and part conference - academic presentations, training seminars and certification courses/exams. Best of all for our UF-ABE researchers specializing in irrigation, it’s only a 2 hour drive away.


Research Showcase
UF-ABE research will be featured in both the agriculture and landscape sessions of the Technical Program at Irrigation Show. PhD candidate Maria Zamora is presenting an overview of irrigation and nutrient best management practices in corn. Research associate Bernard Cardenas will discuss recent work pertaining to the EPA WaterSense pressure regulating spray sprinkler body specification

Dr. Michael Dukes will focus on finds from a multi-year Orange County (FL)-based smart irrigation technology study. And Dr. Kati Migliaccio is presenting on rainfall data resources for use in Florida.

E3 Learners
Once again this year I’ll be collaborating with the Irrigation Foundation on digital content. We hope to shine a light on the E3 Learners Program, which selects students from across the country to attend the Irrigation Show, complete coursework and network with established industry pros. This year’s Learner class is comprised of 30 students from 17 different states! Young people are the future of the industry, and the Irrigation Foundation is doing their best to welcome them into the fold.

Irrigation Show & Education Conference 2016: A Student’s Perspective

Last week, UF Graduate Student Maria Vrachioli attended the Irrigation Association’s Irrigation Show and Education Conference as a participant in the immersive E3 Program for students and instructors. This is Ms. Vrachioli’s report back.


I am a third year PhD student in the Food and Resource Economics (FRE) Department in the University of Florida.  As an economist, I have focused on creating applied mathematical models to analyze water efficiency and productivity in the agricultural sector, where the ever increasing demand for food is challenging us to develop more efficient and sustainable ways of exploiting our natural resources.

Given that agriculture is the biggest consumer of fresh water in the world, irrigation is at the epicenter of this dilemma. To this end, my doctoral dissertation will be focused on understanding how the adoption of new irrigation technologies by farmers can allow them to use a scarce water resource more efficiently, while maximizing their profits. With the support of colleagues at the World Bank, this analysis will be applied on a data base of water consumption and agricultural production in Morocco.

E3 Program Ready
Attending the 2016 Irrigation Show and Education Conference as an E3 Learner will be a good way for me to bridge my academic research on agricultural water use with the latest technologies and practices in irrigation. I took two courses during the event: 
  • Agricultural Irrigation Specialist
  • Principles of Irrigation: Agriculture

Reflection
These courses gave me a really good base on which I can build my future research and let me understand deeply the terminology used by the experts in the irrigation field. I would say that I enjoyed both of the courses, but the Principles of Irrigation in Agriculture course was a little bit more interesting for me as through this 2-day course I was afforded a good review of all the information I learned in different irrigation classes at university.

One of the things that I found really surprising was despite the fact that we have so many efficient irrigation technologies available for farmers, sometimes training is lacking for them to properly adopt new irrigation technology. This results in less efficient irrigation practices and less profits for the farmers.

I spent many hours in the show floor of the IA event and I was really surprised by all the new and innovative technologies presented there. You could find all kinds of companies related to agriculture and landscape irrigation.

Advice for 2017
Attending the Irrigation Show was an amazing experience for me and I strongly recommend students to attend it in the future. I strongly believe that applying to E3 cannot only help you build on your theoretical and practical skills through the courses, but also it is the best way to expand your network and why not get in contact with your future employer in the irrigation industry.

Smarten Up for 2017: A SWAT Training in Southwest Florida

Last week the Dukes research group conducted its third smart irrigation technology training of 2016. This collaboration with Tampa Bay Water and Florida Irrigation Society packed the Brooker Creek Preserve’s auditorium with area contractors, municipal reps, Extension faculty and local water management district staff eager to learn about water-saving technology.  


Best Practices
Following proper design and regular system maintenance, irrigation best practices also include using smart water application technology to avoid unnecessary irrigation. 
During the training, presenters covered types of smart technology and proper installation and programming. They also drew lessons from recent field experiences to underscore the importance of correct wiring to maximize device effectiveness.

Guest presenter Frank Galdo of Pasco County Utilities (pictured above) stepped in during the latter section to discuss how two types of sensors (rain and soil moisture) can be used on one irrigation timer – a scenario his team encountered and diagnosed this summer.

In the Clouds
Seven vendors were also in attendance last week. Despite the growing popularity of the cloud-based irrigation timer sector, trainers kept the focus on soil moisture sensor and weather-based irrigation controller basics.

Vendors, however, had plenty to present on their unique interpretations of cloud-based irrigation technology – which allows for WiFi-enabled weather-based programming as well as remote access to your timer from any mobile device.

Notes from Long Beach: Irrigation Show and Conference 2015

Earlier this month I attended the Irrigation Association’s Irrigation Show and Education Conference in Long Beach, CA. The UF contingent included me, Bernard Cardenas and Drs. Michael Dukes and Kati Migliaccio. We were among the several thousand experts, contractors, technicians and brand reps whom coursed through the Long Beach Convention Center over seven days.

Nerd Alert
In addition to the usual classes and technical sessions, this year’s event featured an ASABE/IA Irrigation Symposium to showcase peer-reviewed research, and a Drought Summit to strategize around water scarcity.

Of course, the symposium is where us researchers shine. We presented on soil moisture sensors, weather-based controller programming, sustainable landscapes and water-use efficiency and smart phone apps for irrigation scheduling and management.

Roving Reporter
I was in full media mode during conference week – tweeting, periscoping and shooting video for a collaborative project with the Irrigation Foundation’s E3 Program. The E3 program sponsors students and instructors from across the country to attend the IA Conference and immerse themselves in all the industry connections and expertise the week affords one. 
I also had the honor of presenting on social media best practices alongside longtime colleague/mentor Richard Restuccia.

On the Cusp
You cannot report back about the Irrigation Show without mentioning the product expo. Every year the expo floor seems to grow larger and this year was no exception. I was on the hunt for new/interesting urban landscape irrigation products and these days that usually means cloud-based and wireless.

I managed to locate a couple of new WaterSense certified timers in this category. I also stumbled upon a soil moisture sensor touting said features. The future looks bright for remotely accessible smart irrigation!

On-site Insight
From my perspective, conferences like IA’s are invaluable as conduits for in-person contact with industry peers. For instance, while gathering content for a high-efficiency nozzle video for Miami-Dade’s Urban Conservation Unit, I learned from the EPA WaterSense team attending the conference that pressure regulating sprinkler (PRS) bodies are a more reliable means for water savings in the landscape.
In fact, WaterSense has plans to certify PRS bodies in the near future. For incentive-based programs like Miami-Dade’s this is a critical new development. And for an irrigation-head like me, well this is the kind of on-site insight that I am ALL about. See you next year in Las Vegas!
